An Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday, ordered the remand of a 55-year-old man, Moyosore Johnson, at a correctional facility over allegations of causing the death of a 26-year-old woman, Badirat Adebayo, through a botched surgical procedure.
Johnson, whose residential address was not disclosed, was arraigned on a four-count charge, including conspiracy and culpable homicide.
The presiding magistrate, Kausarat Ayofe, declined to take the defendant’s plea, citing the court’s lack of jurisdiction over the matter.
She further directed the police to forward the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.
Ayofe subsequently adjourned the case until March 27, 2025, for mention.
According to the prosecutor, Inspector Segun Adegboye, the incident occurred on July 5, 2024, around 10:00 a.m. at Apata Igbala Hospital, Iseyin, Oyo State.
Adegboye alleged that Johnson performed a surgical procedure on Adebayo, during which he removed her womb, leading to complications that resulted in her death.
“The defendant unlawfully accelerated the cause of death of the deceased by conducting a surgery that led to fatal complications,” Adegboye told the court.
The prosecutor further noted that the alleged offences contravened Sections 516 and 319 of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
With the court’s ruling, Johnson will remain in custody until the DPP’s legal opinion determines the next course of action in the case.
