Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has taken aim at President Bola Tinubu over the repeated failures of Nigeria’s national electricity grid, saying the outages undermine the President’s 2022 campaign promise to deliver steady power within his first four years.
In a statement on his X account on Wednesday, Obi noted that the grid has collapsed twice in January 2026 alone, following approximately 12 breakdowns in 2025. He warned that the situation should concern all Nigerians who expect accountability from their leaders.
“President Bola Tinubu’s campaign promise in 2022 was clear: if I do not provide steady electricity in my first four years, do not vote for me for a second term. Yet, in January 2026 alone, the national grid has already collapsed twice, and the month is not even over. Last year, it collapsed about twelve times,” Obi said.
He also contrasted Nigeria’s energy challenges with Turkey, a country currently hosting Tinubu on a state visit. Obi noted that Turkey, with roughly a third of Nigeria’s population, generates and distributes more than 120,000 megawatts of electricity—far surpassing Nigeria’s current capacity.
“Our appeal is simple: stay at home and confront the nation’s problems. At this rate, we may soon hear of trips to Palau or Vanuatu while critical issues remain unattended at home,” he added.
Obi urged Nigerians to demand transparency and responsible governance rather than focusing solely on elections. His comments come amid ongoing frustrations as households and businesses continue to suffer from erratic power supply.
Recall that the national grid collapsed again on Tuesday, marking the second failure in just four days this month. The outages reportedly caused a sharp drop in electricity generation, leading to widespread blackouts across the country.
