The Senate on Wednesday postponed debate on the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal and Enactment) Bill, 2026, deciding to subject the proposed amendments to further scrutiny before taking a final position.

The decision came after the report of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters was presented during plenary in the absence of the committee chairman, Senator Simon Lalong.

Lawmakers agreed to step down discussion on the bill to allow more time for detailed examination, with consideration now set to resume on Thursday.

In a move reflecting concerns over the sensitive nature of some proposed reforms, the upper chamber resolved to hold an executive session for closed-door discussions.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized the need for caution, particularly with elections approaching.

“This is a very important bill, especially as it is election time. We must take our time to ensure justice is done to all, so that we do not end up at the tribunal,” he said.

The committee report indicates that, if passed, the bill would enhance electoral integrity, boost transparency, and strengthen public confidence in the voting process.

The reforms are also designed to expand voter participation, prevent electoral malpractice, and strengthen the institutional capacity of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Although the House of Representatives has already approved the bill, the Senate insisted on a more deliberate review process to ensure all aspects of the legislation are thoroughly considered.
