Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has approved N16.5 million to support 33 sports associations in preparation for the 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF), scheduled to take place from May 16 to 30 in the state.

Announcing the approval at the June 12 Cultural Center, Abeokuta, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Tokunbo Talabi, stated that each association would receive N500,000.

He emphasized that the funds were strictly for athlete preparations and that a monitoring mechanism would be implemented to ensure accountability and sustainability.

“This financial support is aimed at ensuring our athletes are well-prepared to excel at the National Sports Festival. We will put in place a proper monitoring structure to guarantee that these funds are used effectively,” Talabi said.

He also urged state athletes to develop unique team war songs to boost morale, drawing inspiration from international sports teams.

Furthermore, he cautioned against sensationalism on social media, advocating for constructive engagement that would contribute to the growth of sports in the state.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, revealed that a state-level NSF would be organized in April.

According to him, the event would include participation from two other states to enhance competitiveness and test the preparedness of Ogun’s athletes ahead of the main festival.

“We believe this initiative will help us fine-tune our athletes’ skills and readiness before the main NSF event. The state government is also committed to recognizing and rewarding both individual athletes and outstanding sports associations for their performances,” Isiaka stated.
