The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Tanimu Turaki, says the party has not received any official letter from Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, confirming his resignation from the PDP.
Turaki told newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday after the National Working Committee meeting that the PDP has only seen the widely circulated letter on social media but is yet to receive any formal notice from the governor.
“We have seen in the media a letter purported to be from him resigning his membership of our party, but up to this moment, we have not officially received any such indication from him,” he said.
He explained that Adeleke, like every Nigerian, is free to decide his political future, but the party will only act based on an official communication. Turaki added that the governor’s name remains on the list of aspirants participating in the ongoing governorship primary.
“As I speak to you now, primaries are ongoing and Gov. Adeleke’s name is one of the aspirants vying for the ticket,” he said.
Turaki stressed that the strength of the PDP rests with its members across the country, not individuals who choose to leave. He noted that in states where some governors defected, the larger body of party members remained.
“Our people are with us intact and when election time comes, they will prove to Nigerians that the PDP is still in proper and complete shape,” he said.
He also confirmed that the NWC had reviewed and approved the congresses conducted in Osun to select ad hoc delegates, adding that arrangements for the forthcoming local government election in Anambra were satisfactory.
Turaki said the party has also not been informed by former PDP governors nominated by Tinubu for non-career ministerial appointments. “We are yet to receive any indication from them seeking permission or notifying us of the appointment,” he said.
He urged the Federal Government to urgently review the country’s security structure. “We call on the federal government to brace up and begin to consider a review of the security architecture in this country,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, said on Tuesday that Adeleke will formally join a new political party before December 13 following his resignation from the PDP.
