Former Super Eagles star, Ahmed Musa MON OON, has announced his retirement from international football, bringing to a close nearly 15 years of service to Nigeria’s national team.
Musa, Nigeria’s most-capped player with 111 appearances, shared his decision in an open message to Nigerians and the Super Eagles family.
Reflecting on his career, he described wearing the green and white jersey as the greatest honour of his life, from his first call-up to the U-20, U-23, and senior teams. “Whenever Nigeria called, I showed up without hesitation,” he said.
Throughout his illustrious career, Musa created memorable moments for Nigerian football fans.
He was part of the victorious 2013 Africa Cup of Nations team and scored goals at the FIFA World Cup against Argentina and Iceland, making him Nigeria’s highest goalscorer on football’s biggest stage with four goals.
Serving as Super Eagles captain, Musa emphasized that leadership was about responsibility and support for teammates, particularly younger players. “It was never about being in charge, but about helping the team, supporting younger players, and standing up for the badge,” he noted.
Musa expressed gratitude to coaches, teammates, backroom staff, administrators, and fans at home and abroad for their unwavering support throughout his career. “Football gave me a career, but Nigeria gave me meaning,” he said.
He concluded his farewell with a message of confidence in the team’s future. “I step away with peace and gratitude, knowing I gave my best. I am confident the Super Eagles will continue to move forward, and our bond will never be broken. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle.”
