Arsenal staged a stunning comeback to defeat Newcastle United 2-1 at St. James’ Park on Sunday, with Gabriel Magalhaes heading home a dramatic winner in the 95th minute to boost their Premier League title hopes.
The Gunners, who fell behind early in the first half, showed remarkable resilience and attacking intent throughout the contest. Despite moments of controversy, including a disallowed penalty and debatable officiating calls, Mikel Arteta’s men refused to back down and were rewarded deep into stoppage time.
Newcastle took the lead in the 34th minute when Nick Woltemade rose highest to head past David Raya after what Arsenal players felt was a push on Gabriel.
Moments earlier, Arsenal had been denied a spot kick when VAR overturned referee Jarred Gillett’s initial decision, ruling that Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope made minimal contact on Viktor Gyokeres before bringing him down.
Arsenal dominated much of the play with 64 percent possession and created several chances, forcing Pope into multiple saves, including crucial stops against Eberechi Eze, Bukayo Saka and Jurrien Timber.
The pressure eventually paid off in the 84th minute when substitute Mikel Merino combined with Declan Rice to level the score for the visitors.
With Newcastle struggling to hold on, Arsenal pressed for a winner and found it in stoppage time. From a well-taken corner, Gabriel rose above the defence to power home a header, sparking wild celebrations among the travelling fans and players.
The result came as a major boost for Arsenal following Liverpool’s shock defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday. The victory cuts Liverpool’s lead at the top of the table to two points, keeping Arsenal firmly in the title race.
Speaking after the match, former Manchester United defender and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said, “So big for Arsenal, so big for Arteta. A week ago the glass was half empty, now it is more than half full. Liverpool lose, Arsenal win in stunning fashion. They deserve it.”
Arsenal will now turn their attention to their upcoming Champions League clash with Olympiacos on October 1, before hosting West Ham in the Premier League three days later.
