Ogun State’s investment in sports infrastructure has received a major boost as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially approved the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta to host the forthcoming U-17 West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Nations Cup.

Following a thorough inspection, CAF officials confirmed that the stadium meets all required standards, including pitch quality, safety measures, player facilities, broadcast readiness, and infrastructure.

Leading the delegation, Executive Director of WAFU, Mr. Philip Chare, alongside the Chairman of the Ogun State Football Association and NFF Board Member, Alhaji Ganiyu Majekodunmi, described the 25,000-seat arena as ready for continental football, citing its modern locker rooms, medical and press areas, flawless floodlighting, and robust security arrangements.

Ogun State Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, who spoke after the inspection, described the CAF approval as a proud moment for the state and Nigeria.

“This shows that the investment of the Ogun State Government in sports development is yielding results. After the National Sports Festival, we hosted international friendlies here, and in the next two weeks, we will be holding the 3rd combined U18/U20 African Athletics Championships. The WAFU U-17 tournament is coming later in the year. It is clear that the mission and objectives of our investment have been achieved,” he said.

Hon. Isiaka added that hosting countries from across Africa will elevate the state’s profile, boost tourism, and energise local businesses and sports fans.

“But this achievement is not for Ogun State only, it is for the entire nation. It has put Nigeria back on the world map for sports development. This approval reflects the growth of sports infrastructure in the country and shows that Nigeria is serious about investing in its future,” he added.
