Chelsea have completed the signing of Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho in a £40m deal, making him their ninth arrival of the summer.

The 21-year-old has put pen to a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge after being left out of United’s pre-season squad. He described his move as a dream switch, saying, “I watched the Club World Cup and to join the world champions is special – we’re the best team in the world! It’s amazing to be here and I’m very happy.”

Garnacho had been valued at £50m by United, but both clubs eventually settled at £40m, with a 10 per cent sell-on clause included in the agreement. The fee represents United’s biggest academy graduate sale in their history, surpassing previous exits like Danny Welbeck and Adnan Januzaj.

Sky Sports reports that United consider the deal pragmatic, as the player was keen to leave and had no place in Ruben Amorim’s plans. “It’s a £40m fixed fee and United will also retain a 10 per cent sell-on clause. From United’s perspective, they are very happy because this is a strong deal for a player who didn’t really have a future at the club,” football reporter Kaveh Solhekol said.

The Argentina international rejected approaches from other clubs as he preferred a move to Chelsea, who have already spent nearly £300m this summer on new arrivals including Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, Estevao and Jamie Gittens.

United manager Ruben Amorim earlier admitted Garnacho’s talent was never in doubt but said a fresh start was best for all parties. “You can see he’s a really talented boy, but sometimes things don’t work out. He wanted a new challenge, and we tried to make everything okay for the club, the coach and the player. It’s a natural thing in football.”

Chelsea, meanwhile, pulled out of striker Nicolas Jackson’s proposed loan to Bayern Munich following an injury to Liam Delap, meaning Jackson will remain part of Enzo Maresca’s first-team squad.

With Garnacho’s arrival, Chelsea’s spending this transfer window now stands at £296.8m, though they have also recouped over £314m in player sales.
