Brighton came from behind to secure a stunning 3–1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, capitalising on a late red card to Trevoh Chalobah that turned the game in their favour.
Chelsea, who had gone unbeaten at home this season before the clash, took the lead midway through the first half through Cole Palmer, who calmly slotted home after a fine exchange with Nicolas Jackson.
The Blues looked in control for much of the contest, limiting Brighton’s chances while creating several opportunities to extend their lead.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the closing stages. With the game finely poised at 1–1 following a well-placed header from Danny Welbeck, Chelsea were reduced to 10 men in the 78th minute when Chalobah received his second yellow card for a late challenge.
Brighton wasted no time taking advantage. Welbeck struck again in the 84th minute, firing past Djordje Petrovic after a swift counter-attack, before Maxim De Cuyper sealed the win deep into stoppage time with a composed finish from the edge of the box.
The defeat means Chelsea have now suffered back-to-back red cards in the Premier League, following Moisés Caicedo’s dismissal in their previous match. It also raises questions about the team’s discipline and game management under manager Enzo Maresca.
Speaking after the match, Maresca admitted his frustration at the collapse.
“We controlled the game for long spells, but once you go a man down in this league, it becomes difficult,” he said. “The red card changed everything. We need to stay calmer and manage those moments better.”
Brighton boss Fabian Hürzeler praised his side’s resilience and attacking response.
“We showed great character,” Hürzeler said. “Even after going behind, the players believed in the plan. Danny [Welbeck] was outstanding, and the team’s spirit made the difference.”
The result lifts Brighton into the top half of the table, while Chelsea remain mid-table with mounting pressure to find consistency.
Chelsea will next face a crucial test away from home, as they look to recover from another disappointing night at Stamford Bridge.
