A commercial hall under construction in the Iyana Oloke area of Onikolobo, Abeokuta, collapsed on Thursday afternoon, leaving one construction worker severely injured.
The incident occurred around 1pm, according to eyewitnesses who spoke with newsmen. Two workers were reportedly on site when the structure suddenly gave way. While one of them managed to escape without injury, the other was trapped beneath the rubble.
Residents and passersby quickly mobilised to rescue the trapped worker before emergency responders arrived. He was later pulled out from the debris and rushed for medical attention. As of press time, his condition was said to be critical but stable.
Reacting to the development, the Chairman of the Ogun State Building Collapse and Protection Guild, Adebayo Ogunsola, said preliminary investigations pointed to poor construction practices as the likely cause of the collapse.
“This unfortunate incident appears to be the result of substandard construction work. We are already looking into the details to determine the level of compliance with approved building standards,” he said.
Officials of the Ogun State Building Production Management visited the scene shortly after the incident. The agency subsequently sealed off the affected structure to prevent further accidents.
Residents and commuters in the Onikolobo axis have been advised to exercise caution around the site, as authorities continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
