T he School of Arts and Social Sciences, Federal College of Education, Abeokuta will on Wednesday host its 5th Academic Lecture Series, with Dr Adetutu Adepero Olorunsogo set to deliver a lecture titled, “Folksongs as Repository of Culture: An Appraisal.”
The lecture series will take place at the Political Science Hall of the College by 12.30pm.
Dr Olorunsogo, a distinguished music educator and cultural advocate, brings over three decades of academic and professional experience to the podium. She began her career at the College in 1988 as an Assistant Lecturer and rose through the ranks to become Chief Lecturer in 2012.
She has also served repeatedly as Head of the Music Department and recently directed the Directorate of Education Support Services between 2020 and 2024.
A scholar of wide academic depth, she holds Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in Music, a Master of Education in Curriculum Studies, and a PhD in Music from the University of Lagos, obtained in 2019. Her research interests span music pedagogy, African music, performance studies and curriculum development.
Over the years, she has taught courses such as Theory of Music, African Music, Music Pedagogy, Aural and Ear Training, Piano, Violin and Ensemble Studies, supervising more than 250 student research projects. Her published works include “Music and Religion: The Heartbeat of African Culture” and “Music: A Panacea for National Unity and Stability,” alongside contributions to scholarly books on African musicology and music directing.
Beyond the classroom, Dr Olorunsogo has contributed to national education as a Music Examiner for WAEC from 1998 to 2006 and has served for many years as a Moderator for JAMB.
She has presented papers at major conferences, including the Pan African Society for Musical Arts Education International Conference and the International Symposium in Honour of Professor Akin Euba.
The lecture is expected to explore how folksongs preserve history, values and identity within African societies, while examining their relevance in contemporary education and nation building.
The Dean of the School, Dr Chris Omotosho, and the Provost of the College, Dr R A Soyele, are expected to grace the occasion alongside members of the academic community and invited guests.
The Academic Lecture Series forms part of the College’s commitment to intellectual engagement and the promotion of scholarship in line with its motto, Moulding for Excellence.
