The Ogun State Government has announced a new approach to tackling illegal waste disposal, warning residents that anyone caught dumping refuse on roads will be arrested and required to perform community service.
Speaking at the fourth quarterly meeting of the Governor’s Elders Advisory Council at the Obas’ Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, said the measure is designed to correct offenders with compassion rather than impose monetary fines.
He explained that streets are not designated dump sites and that residents should place their refuse in front of their homes for collection by Private Sector Participants (PSPs).
“Under no condition should you dump refuse on the road. OGWAMA has the authority to arrest offenders, and those arrested will do community service. We will correct in love. You will sweep the road and collect refuse. When people see you doing that, they will understand the consequences, and you won’t return to the same habit,” Oresanya said.
The Commissioner also highlighted Governor Dapo Abiodun’s commitment to environmental management, noting the state’s investment in new equipment for both OGWAMA and private waste operators to strengthen waste collection across Ogun State.
Addressing noise pollution, Oresanya revealed that several religious centres and other facilities violating noise regulations have been shut down.

Oresanya stressed that sanitation is a daily responsibility, and cited Section 6 of the Constitution empowering Local Government Health Officers to inspect homes, ensure bins are not overflowing, and prosecute erring households. Safety consultants from the ministry are also inspecting gas plants across the state, with noncompliant facilities slated for closure.
Commending recent interventions in Ogijo, Chief (Mrs.) Iyabo Apampa urged the ministry to tackle air pollution and the indiscriminate parking of trailers near Ibese and Papalanto cement factories.
Hon. Samuel Olubunmi Dada called on local sanitary officers to fulfill their duties while encouraging residents to prioritize cleanliness.
Chief Olu Okuboyejo, Chairman of the Governor’s Elders Advisory Council, praised the state government’s initiatives in waste management and agricultural development.
He described the 2026 Budget of Sustainable Legacy, recently presented by Governor Abiodun, as a well-structured roadmap for a prosperous year.
