The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has issued a strong statement condemning an attempted military takeover in the Republic of Benin.
In a release from its Abuja headquarters, the regional bloc expressed consternation at reports of the attempted seizure of power, labeling it “a subversion of the will of the people of Benin.”
ECOWAS firmly called for full respect for Benin’s constitution and commended the efforts of the Beninese government and its national army in working to bring the situation under control.
The statement took a severe stance against the plotters, holding them “both individually and collectively responsible for any loss to life and property” resulting from their actions.
In a significant escalation of its commitment, ECOWAS declared it would support the government and people of Benin “in all forms necessary.” This support explicitly includes the potential deployment of the ECOWAS regional standby force to defend the constitutional order and territorial integrity of the country.
