Oyo State recorded a tragic road accident on Tuesday when a Mazda bus collided with a stationary Howo trailer along the Oyo/Ogbomoso Expressway, claiming eight lives and leaving four others injured.
The victims were reportedly travelling from Katsina State to Lagos when the incident occurred near Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, less than three hours from their destination.
An eyewitness said, “The accident involved 18 passengers. The bus swerved and hit a parked trailer from the rear, which immediately caught fire. The trailer had been abandoned on the road for three days.”
Mary Alo, the state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, confirmed the incident. She said, “Nineteen people were involved. Eight persons died, while four are receiving treatment at the Oyo State General Hospital. The corpses are also at the hospital morgue.”
The Oyo State Fire Service responded promptly to the distress call. A statement from the agency read, “Our officers, led by PFS II Makinde, discovered that an 18-passenger Mazda bus hit a stationary Howo trailer, causing it to ignite. We immediately took action to control the fire.”
Authorities have urged road users to adhere strictly to safety regulations and warned against the dangers posed by improperly parked heavy vehicles.
