Manchester United began the 2026/27 Premier League season on a disappointing note on Saturday, suffering a 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City at the MKM Stadium.
Hull City, returning to the top flight after securing promotion through the Championship play-offs, stunned Michael Carrickās side with two first-half goals to claim a memorable victory in front of 24,470 spectators.
Nigeria international Semi Ajayi opened the scoring in the 17th minute, reacting quickest inside the box to convert from a corner and give the hosts an early advantage.
Hull doubled their lead 21 minutes later when Nobel Mendy rose highest to head home Regan Slaterās set-piece delivery in the 38th minute.
Manchester United enjoyed a greater share of possession but struggled to turn their dominance into clear-cut opportunities as Hull defended with discipline and determination.
The hosts maintained their defensive shape after the interval, frustrating Unitedās attempts to find a way back into the contest and preserving their two-goal advantage until the final whistle.
The defeat marked a difficult start to Carrickās first competitive game in charge of Manchester United, while Hull celebrated a remarkable return to the Premier League with three points against one of Englandās most successful clubs.
