The Federal Government of Nigeria has constituted an inter-ministerial committee to plan and coordinate the state funeral of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died on Sunday after a prolonged illness.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, approved the formation of the committee, which is chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, CON.

A statement issued on Monday by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, said the committee is saddled with the responsibility of ensuring a befitting burial for the late elder statesman.

Members of the committee include key ministers and high-ranking officials from various sectors of government, including the Ministers of Finance, Defence, Interior, Works, FCT, Budget and Economic Planning, and Information and National Orientation.

Others are the National Security Adviser, Inspector General of Police, Chief of Defence Staff, and Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), among others.

The Office of the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office (GSO), is to serve as the Secretariat for the committee.

As part of the nationwide mourning arrangements, President Tinubu also directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to open condolence registers at the entrances of their offices to allow members of the public to pay their last respects to the late president.

A central condolence register will also be opened at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja for the diplomatic community and the general public.

The Federal Government said further updates regarding the burial plans would be provided in due course.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 2015 to 2023, died in a London hospital and is to be buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in line with Islamic rites.
