The Lagos State Government has announced a partial shutdown of the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway for four weeks to allow for rehabilitation works on critical sections of the road.

The closure, which takes effect from Wednesday, February 11, 2026, is to enable the Federal Ministry of Works carry out repairs on portions of the expressway that have deteriorated.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday and shared on X. He said the rehabilitation will cover the stretch between the U-Turn Bus Stop and Sango Tollgate, affecting both inbound and outbound lanes.

According to him, the repair work is scheduled to run from February 11 to March 11, 2026, spanning a four-week period.

Osiyemi explained that the project will be executed in two phases to reduce traffic congestion and ease movement for road users.

He said Phase One will focus on the Abeokuta-bound carriageway and will run from Wednesday, February 11, to Wednesday, March 4, 2026. This phase will cover the section from the U-Turn Bus Stop inward to Sango Tollgate.

“During this phase, traffic from Lagos or Abule Egba inward to Abeokuta or Sango Tollgate will be diverted to one half of the carriageway, about 20 metres away from the active work area, before being restored to full access after the work zone,” the statement said.

He added that rehabilitation would be carried out one lane at a time, noting that once work on one half is completed, traffic would be redirected to the rehabilitated section while repairs continue on the other half.

The commissioner stated that motorists heading towards Lagos would enjoy free flow of traffic throughout Phase One.

Osiyemi further said Phase Two of the project, which will affect Lagos-bound traffic, will take place from Wednesday, March 4, to Wednesday, March 11, 2026. This phase will cover the stretch from Obadeyi Bus Stop to Ekoro Junction.

He explained that traffic from Abeokuta or Sango Tollgate inward to Lagos or Abule Egba will be diverted through one half of the road, approximately 20 metres away from the construction zone, before normal flow is restored.

According to him, work will also be carried out in halves during Phase Two, with traffic redirected to completed sections as repairs progress, while motorists travelling towards Abeokuta will continue to move without disruption.

Osiyemi assured road users that adequate traffic management measures would be put in place throughout the duration of the project.

He urged motorists to plan their journeys properly, obey traffic signs and cooperate with traffic officials on duty, while appealing for patience and understanding as the repairs are carried out in the interest of public safety.
