Arsenal continued their fine form in the UEFA Champions League with a commanding 4–0 victory over Spanish side Atletico Madrid at the Emirates Stadium in London on Tuesday night.
Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres was the star of the evening, scoring twice to end his nine-game goal drought and lead the Gunners to an emphatic win in front of their home fans.
After a goalless first half, Gabriel Magalhaes broke the deadlock in the 59th minute with a powerful header from Declan Rice’s free kick. That goal opened the floodgates for Mikel Arteta’s men, who went on to score three more in quick succession.
Gabriel Martinelli doubled Arsenal’s advantage in the 65th minute with a fine curler into the bottom corner, before Gyokeres added two more goals including one that deflected off Atletico’s Hancko to seal a memorable night for the Premier League leaders.
The win leaves Arsenal firmly in control of their Champions League group and maintains their momentum across all competitions.
Atletico Madrid, managed by Diego Simeone, struggled to match Arsenal’s pace and intensity, with only a few late chances denied by Gunners goalkeeper David Raya.
The Spanish club remains in fourth place in La Liga after a slow start to their domestic campaign.
Arsenal, who reached the semifinals of last season’s competition, will look to carry this form into their next group stage fixture as they continue their hunt for European glory.
