In a bid to curb unsafe practices and enhance road safety in Lagos, the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), also known as KAI, has apprehended six individuals for illegally selling sachet alcohol and aphrodisiacs in traffic.
The arrest took place on Monday along the Iyana-Isolo-Ilasamaja axis of the state.
The Corps Marshal of LAGESC, Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole (rtd), confirmed the arrest at the agency’s headquarters in Bolade-Oshodi, emphasizing that such activities contribute to road accidents and public disorder.
“We received complaints from motorists about how vendors engaged in the illegal sales of sachet alcohol, liquor, and aphrodisiacs, among others, in traffic. This can contribute to the high rate of accidents via drunk driving and passenger-induced chaos,” Cole stated.
The arrested individuals were identified as Kemi Akeju (36), Bola Oladimeji (49), Monsurat Bakare (40), Tosin Olayiwola (38), Lateefat Bakare (45), and Stella Joseph (41). According to the Corps Marshal, they have been charged to court for prosecution.
Cole expressed concern over the rising cases of drunk driving in Lagos, describing it as a major cause of road accidents both within and outside the state.
He warned that the agency would take strict legal measures to eradicate the sale of alcohol in traffic.
“The trend of hawking alcohol in traffic must be discouraged, and we will exhaust all lawful options to bring perpetrators to book,” he warned.
Additionally, the Corps Marshal cautioned street traders, hawkers, and building contractors against obstructing roads with construction materials.
He also urged both public and private buildings to engage only approved PSP operators for waste disposal to maintain a cleaner and healthier environment.
