The Lagos and Ogun state governments have expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, who lost their lives in a tragic road accident involving British heavyweight boxer, Anthony Joshua, on December 29, 2025.
The two states commiserated with the families of the deceased, describing the incident as painful and unfortunate.
In a joint statement issued by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, and the Ogun State Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the governments also confirmed that Joshua has been discharged from hospital after receiving medical care.
The statement said Anthony Joshua was discharged late on Tuesday after doctors confirmed that he was clinically fit to continue his recovery from home. It added that the boxer remains deeply saddened by the loss of his two close friends.
“Though discharged from hospital this afternoon, Anthony Joshua is heavy hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends,” the statement read.
It further disclosed that Joshua, accompanied by his mother, visited a funeral home in Lagos to pay their final respects to the deceased as preparations were made for their repatriation later in the evening.
According to the release, the visit was part of his effort to honour the memory of the departed and stand with their families at a difficult time.
The Lagos and Ogun state governments also acknowledged the public reaction that followed the incident. “The governors deeply appreciate the public concern and the show of love and affection over this very sad and unfortunate incident,” the statement said.
The two states equally thanked Tinubu for his involvement and support throughout the period. “We appreciate Mr President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for all the fatherly support he gave throughout the process,” the statement added.
Commending the medical team that attended to Joshua and other injured persons, the governments praised the professionalism of the health workers at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi.
“The quality of care and professionalism displayed by the doctors and medical personnel is truly commendable,” the statement noted.
Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami were described as young men whose lives were cut short in circumstances that have left their families and loved ones in deep mourning, with prayers offered for the repose of their souls and strength for those they left behind.
