A tragic incident struck Dankama in Katsina State as a mother and her five children lost their lives in a building collapse triggered by heavy rainfall.
The collapse occurred around 2 a.m. on Tuesday while the victims were asleep. The head of the household, Muhammad Sani, confirmed the heartbreaking development, revealing that he was away from home when the tragedy struck.
“This affected about 10 people, but sadly, six didn’t survive. Three are currently receiving treatment in the hospital,” he said.
The deceased have been identified as Mariya Sani, 45; Mujahid, 20; Zahariya, 18; Hauwa, 15; Amira; and five-year-old Nura Sani.
Sani, overwhelmed by grief, said he had surrendered to Allah’s will, praying for eternal rest for his lost loved ones.
The incident has thrown the Dankama community into mourning, with residents trooping to the family home to offer condolences and support.
Confirming the incident, the Executive Secretary of the Katsina State Emergency Management Agency, Hajiya Binta Dangani, said officials had visited the area to commiserate with the family and assess the level of destruction for further action.
She added that the state would provide necessary support to the survivors and ensure a comprehensive response.
