Newcastle United etched their name in history on Sunday as they defeated Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium, securing their first major trophy in 70 years.

The Magpies, who last lifted a major title in 1955, showcased resilience and tactical discipline to overcome the Premier League leaders, marking the first silverware of the 2024/25 season.

The highly anticipated final saw both teams starting cautiously, probing for weaknesses in their opponent’s defense.

However, Newcastle broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time when defender Dan Burn rose highest to head home from a well-taken corner, sending the Magpies’ fans into raptures.

Building on their momentum, Newcastle doubled their lead in the 52nd minute. Alexander Isak capitalized on a defensive lapse by Liverpool, coolly slotting the ball past the goalkeeper to put his team in firm control.

Liverpool struggled to respond effectively despite a series of substitutions by manager Arne Slot, including the introduction of Curtis Jones and Darwin Núñez. The Reds found it difficult to break through Newcastle’s well-organized defense.

However, Liverpool’s Federico Chiesa pulled one back in stoppage time (90+4), igniting late hopes for a comeback. But the final whistle confirmed Newcastle’s 2-1 victory, sealing a long-awaited triumph for the club.

Managers React

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, elated by the historic win, expressed his joy. “This is an incredible moment for the club, the players, and our loyal fans. The team showed great character and determination, and we thoroughly deserved this victory,” he said.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot, visibly disappointed, admitted that his side fell short. “We weren’t decisive enough when it mattered. Newcastle played a fantastic game, and they deserved to win today,” he stated.
