Nigeria is awaiting an official decision from world football governing body, FIFA, following a protest filed over the eligibility of players fielded by DR Congo national football team in the recent World Cup playoff final.

The dispute stems from the playoff encounter held in November, where DR Congo edged Nigeria 4 to 3 on penalties to seal qualification. However, the Nigeria Football Federation, on December 15, 2025, formally lodged a complaint questioning the eligibility status of some Congolese players who reportedly switched national allegiance shortly before the fixture.

According to the federation, the protest is centered on whether the players in question fully complied with FIFA regulations guiding changes of national team representation. The NFF maintains that strict observance of eligibility rules is vital to protect the integrity and credibility of international competitions.

The outcome of the review could have significant implications. Should FIFA rule in favour of Nigeria, DR Congo’s victory may be overturned, potentially reshaping the qualification picture ahead of the playoff stage scheduled for March in Mexico.

The development has triggered mixed reactions within the football community. While some stakeholders insist that eligibility regulations must be enforced without compromise, others warn that any reversal of the result could ignite further debate across African football circles.

As of the time of filing this report, FIFA has yet to communicate its final decision. Both nations now await clarity on their World Cup prospects as the football world watches closely.
