A Nigerian woman, Rasheed Monsurat Abidemi, is appealing to the public for urgent financial support to undergo life-saving surgery after being diagnosed with a rare form of oral cancer known as sarcoma.

Monsurat, who was first diagnosed at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Abeokuta and later at the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan in 2022, has been battling the condition for over three years.

The illness has left her in constant pain and has severely affected her ability to eat, speak, and carry out simple daily activities.

During a visit by Tropic Reporters’ Ayodeji Ayobami to her residence at Abule Oke, Ifo in Ogun State on Saturday, Monsurat revealed how much discomfort the condition has caused her.

She struggled to speak but managed to express her hope in the kindness of Nigerians to help her get the medical intervention she urgently needs.

Doctors at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) had recommended surgical intervention since May 2023, but the family says they have been unable to raise the funds required for the procedure.

“She is in constant pain, and her condition has worsened,” a close family member told our correspondent. “We’ve done all we can as a family, but the medical bills are beyond our capacity. We are now appealing to well-meaning Nigerians to come to her aid.”

The total estimated cost for the surgery and post-treatment care is ₦7 million. Fundraising efforts are currently ongoing to help Monsurat receive the urgent care she desperately needs.
