The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of renowned live band legend and founder of the popular Shuga Band, Akinloye Tofowomo, widely known as Akiin Shuga.
According to an official statement released by the family, Akiin Shuga passed away in New Brunswick, Canada. The statement described his passing as a profound loss, noting that it was received “with total submission to the will of God.”
“It is with profound solemnity and total submission to the will of God, that the family of Akinloye Tofowomo (Akiin Shuga) — revered music icon, Grandmaster, and Managing Director of Shuga Limb Foundation and Shuga Entertainment, Nigeria’s most prestigious live band — announces his passing in New Brunswick, Canada,” the statement read.
The family described him as more than just a musician, but a custodian of rhythm, culture, and performance whose artistry spanned over three decades.
“Akinloye Tofowomo was more than a musician; he was a custodian of rhythm, culture, and the spirit of performance. Across more than three decades of excellence — on stage and in mentorship — he redefined what it meant to lead a band with grace, mastery, and purpose,” the statement continued.
Tofowomo, who became a household name in Nigeria’s event and live music circuit, was the Managing Director of both Shuga Entertainment and the Shuga Limb Foundation, a non-profit organization he founded to support people living with physical disabilities.
Tributes have begun pouring in from fans, friends, and industry figures who described Akiin Shuga as “a symbol of resilience and musical brilliance.”
The family, while requesting privacy as they grieve, said details of funeral and memorial arrangements will be communicated later.
He is survived by his wife, children, siblings, and mother.
May his soul rest in peace.
