The Lagos State Government has discredited a viral online publication claiming an update to the state’s Tenancy Law, describing the information as false, misleading, and an attempt to deceive members of the public.
In a statement released and signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Housing, Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, the government stressed that the false narrative did not originate from any of its official agencies, particularly the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA).
“The attention of the Lagos State Government has been drawn to a fabricated online publication stating that the Lagos State Tenancy Law has been updated to better protect tenants and regulate landlord practices,” Odunuga-Bakare said. “For the avoidance of doubt, the Lagos State Government wishes to state unequivocally that the said publication did not emanate from LASRERA.”
She added that, “The Lagos Government is hereby informing members of the public, particularly Lagosians, that the Tenancy Law of 2015 is still subsisting. However, the bill for a new Tenancy Law is currently under consideration at the Lagos State House of Assembly and is yet to be passed into law.”
The Special Adviser emphasized that once the new legislation is passed, “members of the general public will be adequately informed through official government channels.”
Odunuga-Bakare further disclosed that the Ministry of Housing has been actively engaging relevant stakeholders across the state to deliberate on issues around tenancy agreements and monthly rental payments.
According to her, “We are in continuous discussions with professional practitioners, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Community Development Councils (CDC), Community Development Associations (CDA), and Royal Fathers across the five IBILE divisions of the state. These engagements aim to foster a better understanding of real estate processes and address concerns about tenancy practices.”
She warned Lagosians to be vigilant and avoid falling victim to fraudsters who exploit false information to scam unsuspecting individuals.
