In a dramatic turn of events, security details assigned to former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, have been restored, while those of his successor, Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, have been withdrawn, signaling his imminent return to office.
Obasa, who was impeached on January 13, 2025, is set to reclaim his position following interventions by key All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders.
Sources reveal that Meranda, who became the state’s first female Speaker after Obasa’s removal, has been pressured to step down after a high-level meeting over the weekend.
The meeting, attended by former APC National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, former Osun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, former Lagos Commissioner for Justice Dr. Muiz Banire, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), and some lawmakers, reportedly concluded that Obasa’s removal was “illegal.”
“In truth, what they said was that Obasa’s removal was illegal and the lawmakers were directed at the meeting to go and return him,” a source familiar with the discussions disclosed.
Although Meranda has yet to officially resign, her fate appears sealed, and the House is expected to reconvene soon to finalize the leadership change.
The crisis within the Assembly escalated earlier when Department of State Services (DSS) operatives stormed the complex, leading to chaos.
In response, Meranda had indefinitely adjourned plenary two weeks ago, leaving the House in a state of uncertainty.
