The Ogun State House of Assembly has formally institutionalized the role of Principals-General in the state’s education system with the passage of the Principal-General Establishment Law, 2024, defining their functions and responsibilities.

The bill, House Bill No. 016/OG/2024, successfully scaled through its final legislative process following the presentation of a report by the House Committee on Education, Science, and Technology, led by its chairman, Hon. Yusuf Amosun.

Moving for the adoption of the report, Amosun’s motion was seconded by Hon. Olakunle Sobukanla and received unanimous support from all lawmakers.

During the Committee of the Whole, lawmakers scrutinized the bill clause by clause before the Majority Leader, Hon. Yusuf Sheriff, moved for its third reading, seconded by Minority Leader, Hon. Lukman Adeleye, with full House approval.

Following this, the Clerk of the House, Mr. Sakiru Adebakin, read the bill for the third time before Speaker Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide directed that a clean copy be sent to Governor Dapo Abiodun for assent.

Meanwhile, Speaker Elemide has called on parents to prioritize teaching their children the Yoruba language to prevent its extinction. “Our mother tongue is a vital part of our identity. Losing it means losing a significant part of our heritage,” he emphasized.

The Speaker made this appeal after receiving the “Akinkanju Atayese Ewa Asa ati Ise Ile Yoruba” award from the Ewa Asa Cultural Heritage, led by Founder Ademidun Fagbenro and Coordinator Babatunde Akinbiyi.

The group lauded Elemide’s commitment to upholding Yoruba traditions, with Fagbenro noting, “Our goal is to ensure that Yoruba socio-cultural heritage does not fade away, and we appreciate the Speaker’s role in this cause.”

Elemide further encouraged parents to instill discipline in their children, stressing that Yoruba traditions encompass moral values and religious practices essential for a well-ordered society.

In a separate engagement, the Speaker received the Southwest Youth Parliament, led by Speaker Hon. Temitope Joseph.

Their discussions focused on youth empowerment, cultural preservation, and regional development initiatives, with both parties exploring areas of collaboration to strengthen the socio-economic growth of the Southwest.
