Events lined up for the 50th anniversary of Ogun State gathered momentum on Thursday as a lively cultural carnival and road show swept through key parts of Abeokuta, turning the state capital into a hub of colour, rhythm and celebration.

The parade rolled out with six creatively designed floats depicting the state’s major blocs, Remo, Ijebu, Yewa and Egba, under the RIYE identity, alongside a fish themed float symbolising the riverine areas. Together, the displays projected the depth of Ogun’s cultural heritage and unity.

Addressing guests at a reception held at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Kuto, Abeokuta, Governor Dapo Abiodun said the golden jubilee activities reflected the rising profile of the state within the national space, crediting its growth to the industry, innovation and perseverance of its people.

He explained that the carnival went beyond celebration, describing it as evidence of Ogun’s cultural vibrancy and administrative capacity, while stressing that the state continues to make progress on both social and economic fronts.

“Just as we demonstrated during the National Sports Festival, we have again shown that Ogun State is not only the gateway to Nigeria’s prosperity, but also the gateway to tourism, culture and social awakening,” the governor said.

Abiodun noted that the turnout and quality of performances throughout the day showed a renewed sense of pride among residents, adding that the spectacle from morning till evening was both striking and uplifting.

The governor acknowledged the contributions of former leaders whose policies laid the groundwork for development, as well as the commitment of civil servants whose service has remained central to the state’s expanding economy.

He stated that Ogun’s current standing is the result of long years of collective sacrifice and determination, which have helped position the state as a centre of cultural expression with steady growth across various sectors.

According to him, the carnival was deliberately structured to strengthen unity, preserve heritage and promote resilience among the people, noting that the 50th anniversary represents a shared story of identity and progress.

He reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to sustain people oriented programmes and continue to drive development to all parts of the state.

About 3,000 indigenes drawn from the 20 local government areas took part in the festivities, alongside troupes of traditional dancers, drummers, masquerades, cultural performers, skaters and bikers, creating an energetic and festive mood across Abeokuta.

The celebration peaked with a colourful procession that passed through Oke-Igbein, Omida and Oke-Ilewo before arriving at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, where cultural exhibitions, acrobatic acts and musical performances thrilled the large audience.
