The Ogun State Waste Management Authority has commenced a special clearance operation to evacuate accumulated waste across major towns in the state, as part of renewed efforts to restore environmental sanity.
The initiative was announced by the newly appointed Special Adviser to the Governor and Managing Director of OGWAMA, Hon. Farouk Akintunde, who explained that the operation became necessary to address the backlog of refuse that had not been properly cleared before his assumption of office.
He stated that all operational machinery of the authority had been fully deployed to strategic locations across the state, with simultaneous evacuation ongoing in key urban centres including Abeokuta, Sango-Ota, Ijebu-Ode and Ifo.
He also confirmed that the night operation, which had been suspended for several months, has now resumed in full capacity to fast track the clean up process.
Akintunde further disclosed that following a meeting with the executive and members of the Ogun State Association of Waste Managers, lingering operational issues were resolved, paving the way for members to return to their designated coverage areas to support the evacuation drive.
He urged residents to cooperate with assigned waste managers by properly containerising their waste in front of their homes for collection, rather than dumping refuse indiscriminately on roadsides and medians.
The Managing Director warned that anyone found violating waste disposal regulations would face prosecution, stressing that the state government remains committed to maintaining a cleaner and healthier environment for all.
