Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State on Thursday officially received the Torch of Unity, marking the state’s final lap of preparations to host the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival, tagged “Gateway Games 2024″.

The symbolic torch was handed over to the governor at the City Gate along Abeokuta-Siun-Sagamu Expressway by renowned Nigerian badminton champion, Dorcas Adesokan, a double gold medalist at the 2014 African Youth Games and a Women’s Singles and Doubles Champion.

While addressing the gathering, Governor Abiodun described the Torch as a unifying emblem that reflects Nigeria’s enduring spirit and the strength of its diversity.

“The Unity Torch, commencing its journey across the federation in March, symbolizes more than the forthcoming Gateway Games.”

“It embodies our collective aspirations as a nation where diversity strengthens our unity and where our youths are empowered to shine on the global stage,” the governor remarked.

He emphasized that Ogun State fully embraces the symbolism and spirit the torch carries.

“For us in Ogun State, this Unity Torch encapsulates the essence of our mission—celebrating our nation’s rich sporting heritage. It stands not merely as a symbol of sportsmanship but as a beacon of unity, peace, and the enduring spirit of every Nigerian,” he said.

Governor Abiodun also underlined the importance of the festival, tracing its roots back to 1973.

“These are the core objectives of the National Sports Festival, which was established in 1973 to promote unity among Nigerians and reaffirm commitment to sportsmanship, resilience, and national cohesion,” he added.

Expressing confidence in the state’s preparedness, the governor affirmed that Ogun is not only logistically equipped but emotionally invested in hosting a successful sporting event.

“Hosting this prestigious event for the second time, Ogun State is indeed humbled and honoured to receive the Torch of Unity,” he said. “We are prepared to showcase a vibrant culture, exceptional hospitality, and the extraordinary talents of our athletes.”

Governor Abiodun further expressed optimism that the Unity Torch would inspire solidarity among Nigerian youths and rekindle a national spirit of oneness.

“I hope this Torch ignites love among our youths and acts as a symbol of unity for all Nigerians,” he submitted.

The 22nd National Sports Festival officially kicks off on Friday, attracting athletes from across the country in a celebration of sports, culture, and national identity.
