Manchester United have sacked their manager, Ruben Amorim, bringing an end to his 14 month spell at Old Trafford.
The club confirmed the decision in a statement on Monday, saying it was taken “reluctantly” but insisting “it is the right time to make a change.” United are currently sixth in the Premier League table.
Amorim was appointed in November 2024 and guided the club to the UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao last May. Despite that achievement, results and internal disagreements reportedly strained his relationship with the club’s hierarchy.
In its statement, Manchester United said, “With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”
The Portuguese coach had remained committed to a three man defensive system with wing backs for much of his time at the club, only briefly switching to a back four before reverting to his preferred shape.
Reports also suggested tensions over transfer targets and tactical flexibility, particularly with the January transfer window opening.
United added, “The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.”
Former midfielder Darren Fletcher has been placed in temporary charge and will lead the team in their next Premier League fixture against Burnley on Wednesday.
The club said further updates on the managerial situation would be communicated in due course.
