President Bola Tinubu has been conferred with the highest national honour of Saint Lucia, Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia (KCOSL), in recognition of his efforts to strengthen historical and cultural ties between Africa and the Caribbean.

The Governor-General of Saint Lucia, Errol Charles, performed the formal investiture on Monday night at the Government House, Morne Fortune, during an official reception in honour of President Tinubu.

With the prestigious title, Tinubu will now be addressed as Sir Bola Ahmed Tinubu, KCOSL (Hon.), alongside his existing titles as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Speaking at the event, President Tinubu expressed deep gratitude to the people and government of Saint Lucia, describing the honour as a symbol of unity and shared heritage.

“I am here as one of you, representing that historical journey taken by our forebears, the history that we cannot reverse but must build upon for mutual progress,” Tinubu said.

“I came here as a president, but I’m leaving as a knight. I’m greatly honoured, on behalf of nearly 220 million Nigerians, to stand before you to say thank you,” he added.

The Governor-General noted that the national honour reflects Saint Lucia’s appreciation of Tinubu’s leadership in Africa and his commitment to fostering cooperation in key areas such as trade, education, healthcare, climate resilience, and cultural exchange.

“Your leadership, Mr. President, and your commitment to unity between Africa and the Caribbean are deserving of this recognition,” Charles stated.

Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Philip J. Pierre, also praised Tinubu’s visit and his acceptance of the honour, stressing the historical connection between both regions.

“For Saint Lucia and the OECS, part of our heritage lies in Africa. We are proud of that, and we must develop it to bring our people closer. Africa and the Caribbean can be one and must be one,” Pierre said.

He added that the physical distance between the two regions should not hinder their relationship.

“We are just eight hours away from Africa. We must build the links, share the knowledge, and enjoy the fruits of Africa’s greatness together,” Pierre said.

President Tinubu, who addressed the Saint Lucian Parliament earlier in the day, pledged to deepen ties with Saint Lucia and other member states of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).

He also promised to promote greater economic collaboration and cultural exchange between Nigeria and the Caribbean nations.

The Governor-General described the visit as historic, noting that many Saint Lucians trace their roots to Africa due to the painful history of transatlantic slavery.

“Deeper than friendship is that spirit of kinship planted generations ago. Your visit is like that of a long-lost relative finally returning home,” Charles noted.
