Abuja – The Federal Government has clarified that students in senior secondary schools are free to select subjects across different academic streams under the revised curriculum, as registration for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) continues.
In a statement on Saturday, the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, alongside the Minister of State for Education, Sa’id Suwaiba Ahmad, said all approved subjects remain open to students, provided choices are guided by school authorities, parents, or certified school counsellors.
The ministers explained that students pursuing science can choose subjects traditionally under the arts or social sciences, while arts and social science students may also take science-related subjects. They said the curriculum was designed to be flexible, student-centred, and supportive of diverse academic interests and career pathways.
On Information and Communication Technology, the ministers noted the subject has been renamed Digital Technology, clarifying that the change is in name only and does not affect the curriculum content. Students who previously offered ICT remain eligible to sit for Digital Technology in examinations.
The Ministry also addressed trade subjects, confirming that six have been identified and approved. Students may register for any trade subject taught in their school, but there is no obligation for those who have not been exposed to these subjects to register for them as a third subject.
Reaffirming its commitment to proper guidance, the Ministry urged parents, school proprietors, counsellors, and examination bodies to rely on verified information to assist students in making informed decisions.
“The Federal Government will continue to champion seamless, accurate, and well-coordinated registration processes across the country,” the statement concluded.
