Vice President Kashim Shettima has called for increased industrial expansion across Nigeria’s agricultural value chain, stressing that food security can only be achieved through a strong partnership between the government and the private sector.

Speaking at the commissioning of Springfield Agro Limited’s crop protection chemical plant in Ewu-Osi, along the Sagamu-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, Shettima, who was represented by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Hon. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting businesses that contribute to national food security.

“Our duty as a government is to remove barriers and provide the necessary support for businesses. Agriculture remains a cardinal priority of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and this resolve has inspired the quality and scale of programs designed to support farmers in increasing their productivity and yield,” he stated.

The Vice President lamented that Africa, despite its vast arable land, contributes less than 2% to global manufacturing, a reality he described as unacceptable.

He emphasized that Nigeria must lead the charge in reversing this trend by creating an enabling environment for local businesses to thrive, innovate, and compete on a global scale.

“Nigeria has no excuse not to be at the forefront of agricultural industrialization. We must create an ecosystem where local firms can compete globally while meeting domestic demand. The commissioning of Springfield Agro’s new plant is a step in the right direction,” he added.

Shettima commended Springfield Agro Limited, a subsidiary of the Kewalram Chanrai Group, for its commitment to Nigeria’s agricultural sector since its inception in 2004.

He noted that its investment in local production demonstrates resilience, foresight, and dedication to national development.

“The commissioning of this plant aligns perfectly with the federal government’s agenda to combat hunger and enhance food security. This is the kind of investment we want to see replicated across the country,” he said.

He also praised the Ogun State government for fostering a business-friendly environment and encouraged other states to emulate its approach in driving industrial expansion and job creation.

Ogun’s Commitment to Industrial Growth

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, who was represented by his Deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, acknowledged Springfield Agro’s contributions to the agricultural sector, describing its expansion into manufacturing as a significant milestone.

“Ogun State remains committed to creating a conducive environment for industries to flourish. Agriculture is a critical component of our economic development strategy, and we will continue to support businesses that drive innovation and growth,” he stated.

The Governor highlighted Springfield Agro’s impact beyond Ogun State, noting that as a key member of the Kewalram Chanrai Group’s Afriventure business unit, the company has played a major role in agriculture and trade across Africa, particularly in the export of agricultural commodities and investments in other essential sectors like frozen fish and industrial chemicals.

He reassured investors that the state government remains dedicated to improving its Ease of Doing Business framework, providing necessary infrastructure, policies, and incentives to attract and sustain investments.

In his welcome address, Chairman of Kewalram Chanrai Group, Mr. NG Chanrai, expressed confidence in the Nigerian market, stating that Springfield Agro’s success in the country has encouraged the company to expand to other regions.

“In line with the federal government’s policies on agriculture, we are committed to producing quality products that meet consumer demand. All materials used in production are sourced locally to support indigenous manufacturers,” Chanrai stated.

He also revealed that the company has provided over 4,000 jobs in Ogun State, reinforcing its role in economic empowerment and industrial growth.
