Cotonou – A small group of soldiers in Benin claimed to have ousted President Patrice Talon on Sunday, raising fears of a military takeover in the West African nation.
The presidency, however, quickly dismissed the move, assuring that the president was safe and the situation was under control.
“This is a small group of people who only control the television.”
“The regular army is regaining control. The city and the country are completely secure,” Talon’s office told AFP.
The attempted coup, which briefly interrupted regular broadcasts, caused concern among citizens as rumors spread on social media. Security forces were reportedly deployed to key locations to maintain order.
Observers noted that while such incidents are rare in Benin, they underscore the persistent challenges some African nations face in ensuring political stability and military discipline.
The presidency has appealed for calm, assuring the public that President Talon remains in full command and the government is functioning normally.
