Kano State witnessed a double tragedy on Friday, leaving three people dead and several others injured in separate fire incidents across the state.
The first incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Zaria Road near Kura Market Junction in Kura Local Government Area. A petrol tanker truck, registered NGZ 250 XA and carrying approximately 30,000 litres of petroleum products, reportedly fell and caught fire.
The vehicle struck a cyclist, who managed to escape unharmed. Three other victims were found unconscious at the scene and later confirmed dead.
Kano State Fire Service, in collaboration with police and road safety officials, responded swiftly. Two fire trucks from the agency’s headquarters and the Kura fire station were deployed to manage the blaze.
The victims were handed over to ASP Ahmad Lawan of the Kura Police Division. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
Less than two hours later, another fire broke out at a two-storey business building measuring roughly 200 by 200 feet on Maiduguri Road, Hamisu Plaza, Tarauni Local Government Area. The fire affected three shops, while the rest were saved by firefighters.
A fire truck attached to an ongoing trade fair assisted in containing the blaze. The cause of this fire is also under investigation.
The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, appealed to the public to exercise caution when handling fire, especially during the dry Harmattan season.
He also urged motorists to drive carefully and adhere to traffic rules to prevent accidents that could result in loss of life or property.
