President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, describing him as a pillar of support during the struggle for the actualization of the annulled June 12, 1993, election and a firm believer in his eventual rise to the presidency.
Speaking at the 8th-day Fidau prayer held in honour of the revered monarch at Dipo Dina International Stadium, Ijebu Ode, President Tinubu acknowledged that the late Oba Adetona played a key role in his emergence as president in 2023.
“The Awujale was always there for us. He supported us during the June 12 annulment. He was steadfast and resolute. He was very honest, bold, courageous, and truthful. He would not deceive you,” Tinubu declared during his emotional address.
The President described the late monarch as a pride to the Yoruba race, noting that Oba Adetona stood firmly for what was right and just, even in the face of political adversity. He praised the Awujale’s honesty, courage, and unwavering loyalty to causes he believed in.
Also speaking, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, described the late Awujale as a moral compass whose reign brought tremendous development to Ijebuland. He noted that the monarch was a unifying figure who upheld religious harmony and used his influence to speak for the voiceless.
According to Governor Abiodun, Oba Adetona was not only a custodian of culture and tradition but also a mentor to many, including leaders across different sectors.
The Fidau prayer was attended by top dignitaries including the Governors of Ekiti, Ondo, and Kwara states — Biodun Oyebanji, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq respectively. Also in attendance were the Deputy Governors of Ogun, Lagos, and Oyo states, former governors Olusegun Osoba, Gbenga Daniel, and Ibikunle Amosun, as well as ministers, lawmakers, and royal fathers from across the country.
President Tinubu appreciated Governor Abiodun for his care and honour towards the late monarch, and called on the people of Ijebuland to unite and preserve the legacies left behind by Oba Adetona.
