Tinubu has congratulated the Super Eagles for their bronze medal victory at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, praising the team for their resilience and determination after overcoming disappointment earlier in the tournament.
The commendation was contained in a State House press release issued on Saturday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The Super Eagles defeated seven time champions Egypt in a penalty shootout after regulation time ended in a draw, a match in which the Nigerian side dominated play to secure third place at the tournament in Morocco.
Tinubu noted that the players showed strength of character by putting behind them the pain of their semi final defeat to host nation Morocco, where Nigeria also lost on penalties.
According to him, the victory reflected the fighting spirit for which Nigerians are known. “Despite their good run during the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi final match to Morocco during the penalty shootout last Wednesday, and our people’s hopes of winning the championship were dashed,” the President said.
He added, “However, our players remained undaunted, and exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off.”
Tinubu further assured the team of the nation’s pride as they receive their medals in Rabat. “We will all be proud of them as they receive their hard earned bronze medal on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco,” he stated.
Expressing appreciation to the players, Tinubu concluded, “Thank you, our gallant Super Eagles. Thank you, our national team players. This bronze medal surely feels good like gold.”
