President Bola Tinubu has assured the Acting Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, of his total support as he assumes leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, with a clear mandate to restore peace and strengthen security across the country.

The assurance was contained in a State House press release issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Speaking during the decoration ceremony held at the State House, Tinubu said the appointment of Disu followed careful consideration of his record and dedication to service. He noted that he had observed Disu’s performance while serving in Lagos during his tenure as governor.

“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” the President said.

Disu’s decoration comes following the retirement of the former Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and pending ratification by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmation by the Senate. The council is expected to meet next week.

Describing the appointment as coming at a critical time, Tinubu urged the Acting IGP to rebuild public confidence in the police and work in close collaboration with other security agencies to tackle insecurity.

“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority. It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word, you have my full support,” the President added.

Tinubu further charged Disu to advance the security pillars of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, expressing confidence in his discipline, operational experience and leadership capacity.

“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” he said, reaffirming his belief that the country would prevail under committed leadership.

The President also paid tribute to Egbetokun, who attended the ceremony with his spouse. “To the outgoing Inspector General, we are a grateful nation. Nigeria appreciates your contribution to maintaining law and order,” Tinubu stated.

He urged the retired police chief to remain available to offer useful advice to his successor, adding, “You have not succeeded without a good successor. His success will also be part of your legacy.”

Tinubu called on all security stakeholders to work collectively to safeguard lives and property during what he described as a critical period for the nation.

Among those present at the ceremony were the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, retired Assistant Inspector General of Police Hakeem Odumosu, senior government officials, as well as the parents and family members of the Acting IGP.
