Two people have lost their lives while 19 others sustained injuries in an accident along the Lokoja-Okene road on Tuesday.
The Sector Commander of the Kogi State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Tenimu Etuku, confirmed the incident in a statement in Lokoja.
He said four of the injured sustained various degrees of injuries, ranging from bruises to fractures, and were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
He attributed the cause of the lone accident to excessive speeding, stating, “From the manifest, the ill-fated bus reportedly left Kano on Monday evening, heading to Auchi/Benin before the unfortunate incident that happened at 9:40 am on Tuesday.
The cause of the lone accident was excessive speeding.”
Etuku added, “The FRSC personnel, who carried out the rescue, have deposited the two corpses in the morgue of the Kogi Specialist hospital in Lokoja.”
He further urged motorists to exercise caution on the highways, especially during the Yuletide, saying, “Motorists or road users must be careful and adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations to avoid such accidents and wastage of precious lives. By so doing, they will greatly contribute to reducing the number of accidents and fatalities across the country.”
Earlier, some passengers lost their lives in a road crash along the Isara-Remo area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency revealed that the accident occurred at about 3 am, and the two passengers of a Suzuki bus were discovered by TRACE operatives and police officers at about 7 am.
