A 33-year-old man has died after falling into an abandoned well at a filling station in the Alakia Adegbayi area of Ibadan, Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning at a Rain Oil Filling Station, where the victim reportedly entered the unused well to clean debris but became trapped.
Confirming the incident, the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service Agency, Maroof Akinwande, said the agency received a distress call at 10.53 a.m. that someone had fallen into a deep well.
“This agency received a distress call on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at exactly 10.53 hours through a telephone call that a person was trapped in a well,” Akinwande said in a statement.
He explained that fire officers, led by Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent Bamidele Samsudeen, immediately mobilised to the scene with rescue equipment.
“On arrival, the officers swung into action and successfully recovered the body from the well. The corpse was later handed over to policemen from the Gbagi Police Division in Ibadan,” he added.
Akinwande noted that the rescue operation was carried out jointly with the Federal Fire Service, Ibadan Command.
According to preliminary findings, the victim was believed to have died from inhalation of ammonia gas while attempting to clean debris inside the abandoned well.
The fire service boss urged residents and business owners to take safety seriously, particularly around abandoned wells and other hazardous environments, to prevent avoidable loss of lives.
He also disclosed that the state recorded 246 fire related incidents in 2025, during which 42 persons were rescued alive, while 30 bodies were recovered across different emergency operations in the state.
