In a major breakthrough against human trafficking, the Oyo State Police Command has dismantled a trafficking syndicate operating in Ibadan, the state capital, rescuing 83 adults and one child believed to be nationals of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

According to preliminary investigations, the victims were lured into Nigeria under the false promise of lucrative employment opportunities, only to be held captive in a house located in the Orogun area of Ibadan for an undisclosed period.

Confirming the operation, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer stated, “The victims were misled into believing they were coming to Nigeria for jobs. Unfortunately, they were exploited and held against their will.”

Authorities also revealed that the syndicate had extorted significant sums from the victims’ families. “There are credible claims that the traffickers collected substantial amounts, reportedly in US dollars, from the victims’ parents and relatives, under the guise of processing travel and job placement fees,” the police said.

The rescued victims are currently being sheltered at the Oyo State Police Headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, where further investigations are underway to determine the full scope of the trafficking network and apprehend all parties involved.

Oyo State Commissioner of Police, while addressing journalists, assured that the command would leave no stone unturned in prosecuting those responsible.
“This incident is a grave reminder of the persistent threat of human trafficking. We are committed to ensuring that justice is served, and the perpetrators will face the full weight of the law,” he said.

The Commissioner further advised citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities promptly.
“Human trafficking is a menace that thrives in silence. We call on the public to assist security agencies with credible information,” he added.

The police have commenced a thorough probe into the matter, while arrangements are being made to liaise with appropriate authorities to ensure the safe return of the rescued victims to their home country.

This operation highlights ongoing concerns about human trafficking routes across West Africa and the need for stronger cross-border collaborations to curb the menace.

More details are expected to emerge as investigations continue.
