Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has described the late Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, as a rare leader, a mentor to generations, and a fearless defender of Yoruba culture and tradition.
Speaking during the 8th Day Fidau Prayer held in honour of the late monarch at the Dipo Dina International Stadium, Ijebu-Ode, Governor Abiodun said the Awujale’s reign was marked by truth, uprightness, and an unwavering commitment to the growth and unity of Ijebuland.
“The late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona was a moral compass whose reign brought unprecedented development to Ijebuland. He was more than a king. He was a mentor to many, a voice for the voiceless, and a symbol of truth and courage,” Abiodun stated.
The governor highlighted the role of the late monarch in promoting religious harmony, noting that Oba Adetona stood above religious differences and used his position to unite his people.
“He lived a life of unshaken faith. He built bridges across religious and ethnic lines and upheld the dignity of Ijebuland in every sphere,” Abiodun added, urging the people of Ijebu and Ogun State to reflect on the life of the late king and continue to uphold the values he stood for.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who also attended the Fidau prayer, acknowledged the Awujale’s significant role in his political journey, especially during the struggle to actualize the annulled June 12, 1993, presidential election and during the 2023 general elections.
“The Awujale was always there for us. He supported us during the June 12 annulment. He was steadfast and resolute. He was very honest, bold, courageous, and truthful. He would not deceive you,” the President said, describing the monarch as a pride to the Yoruba nation.
The event was graced by prominent dignitaries including the Governors of Ekiti, Ondo, and Kwara states, Biodun Oyebanji, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as well as the Deputy Governors of Ogun, Lagos, and Oyo states.
Former governors Olusegun Osoba, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, and Senator Ibikunle Amosun were also in attendance, alongside ministers, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and religious leaders.
Oba Adetona, who passed away at the age of 91, was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs, having ascended the throne in 1960. He was widely respected for his courage, wisdom, and fierce defence of cultural identity.
