Kano State APC leader, Alwan Hassan, has stirred controversy with claims that the vast majority of ministers who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari misused their offices and should face prosecution.
Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme, Hassan accused the Buhari administration of weak oversight and excessive autonomy granted to ministers over public funds.
“There has never been a time when ministers were given free rein without supervision like during Buhari’s administration.”
“Their capital budgets were released 100 per cent, and nobody questioned what they did with the funds. If we open the books, 95 per cent of those people should be in jail by now. Only about five per cent were good,” he said.
Hassan further alleged that Buhari was aware of questionable practices within his cabinet, reportedly warning some ministers to keep their documents for future accountability.
He described ministers as independent power blocs, saying, “Everyone was his own cabal. If you got the chance to meet Buhari and explain things to him, you became a cabal. Once you were appointed, your job was abdicated to you.”
Comparing the former administration with the current government, Hassan praised President Bola Tinubu’s hands-on approach, particularly in managing public finances and ensuring prompt payment for contractors.
He also defended the administration on security, citing improvements in crisis management and the recent rescue of kidnapped students in Kebbi State.
On the internal APC crisis in Kano State, Hassan blamed leadership failures for divisions, warning that without alliances, the party may struggle to win the state in future elections.
Hassan concluded that much of the criticism within the party stems from envy and internal rivalry, adding that effective public servants often become political targets.
