Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, on Wednesday commissioned the Imeko Afon Township Road and directed the immediate reconstruction of the Olorunda Imeko Road, following his assessment of the road’s condition.

The township road, first constructed in 1959 during the administration of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, was inaugurated at a ceremony held in Imeko Afon Local Government Area.

Speaking at the event, Abiodun said his decision to approve the reconstruction of the Olorunda Imeko Road was based on his personal experience while traveling on the route earlier in the day.

He described the state of the road as unacceptable and assured residents of prompt government intervention.

According to the governor, he immediately instructed the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure to prepare the project cost and ensure that the road is advertised for bidding by qualified contractors.

“I have directed that the project be presented at the next Executive Council meeting, and once approved, work should commence without delay,” Abiodun said.

The governor disclosed that his administration has constructed over 1,600 kilometres of roads across Ogun State in the last six and a half years. He added that the government also facilitated the construction of the 100 kilometre Sagamu Interchange, Papalanto, Obelle Road using reinforced concrete to guarantee durability.

Abiodun said his government would continue to respond to criticism with visible performance, noting that Yewaland would continue to receive equitable attention in the state’s development agenda.

He also commended Tinubu for the ongoing Badagry Sokoto Highway project, which passes through Imeko Afon. According to him, the road would ease the movement of farm produce and stimulate economic activities across border communities when completed.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya, said the Imeko Afon Township Road would improve trade relations between Imeko Afon and Abeokuta North Local Government Areas. He added that the project would also help address flooding challenges in the community.

The Chairman of the Ogun State Council of Obas and Paramount Ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, praised the administration for what he described as renewed attention to infrastructure development in Ogun West and urged the governor to sustain the tempo.

In his remarks, the Obaladi of Afon, Oba Babatunde Rasheed, said the reconstruction of the township road had brought relief to residents, noting that the road had suffered years of neglect.

Chairman of Imeko Afon Local Government, Hon. Theophilus Oloyede, said the project reflected the government’s commitment to economic growth, adding that improved road access would enhance agricultural productivity.

Also speaking, the lawmaker representing Imeko Afon State Constituency, Hon. Jemili Akingbade, described the road as a major boost to commerce and farming activities in the area.

The member representing Yewa North Imeko Afon Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, said the completion of the township road would promote prosperity for residents and strengthen the state’s economy.
