The Cross River State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a woman whose body was discovered inside a church toilet in Calabar after she was reported missing by her family.
The deceased, identified as Blessing Ayebe, was said to have attended a church service on Saturday, June 28, in the Ikot Ansa area of Calabar Municipality but did not return home after the programme.
Her disappearance prompted members of her family to begin a search, while her daughter, Peace Minka Ayebe, formally reported the matter to the Federal Housing Police Station on Tuesday, July 1. She told the police that she was alerted to her mother’s disappearance by her brother, Saviour Ayebe.
The woman’s body was later discovered around 9 p.m. on Sunday, June 29, inside the church’s toilet facility, throwing the community into shock.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Cross River State Police Command, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said an investigation had commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
He disclosed that the corpse had been deposited in a mortuary for preservation and an autopsy to establish the cause of death.
“The corpse has been deposited at the mortuary for preservation and autopsy to determine the cause of death. No suspect has been identified or arrested at this stage, as there is presently no evidence of foul play.
“Investigation is ongoing, and further developments will be communicated as they unfold,” the police spokesperson said.
The police said no arrest had been made in connection with the incident, stressing that investigations were still ongoing.
