The House of Representatives was on Wednesday thrown into a rowdy session as lawmakers clashed over a motion seeking to summon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the alleged non funding of constituency projects across the country.

The motion, moved by Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North and South Federal Constituency of Abia State on the Labour Party platform, called on the President to appear before the House to explain the persistent delay in funding constituency projects.

The motion was seconded by another lawmaker, while a proposal was also made that the House suspend plenary for one week until the issue was resolved.

The proposals immediately triggered a heated debate on the floor of the Green Chamber, with members sharply divided over the constitutional propriety of summoning the President.

Leading the opposition to the motion, Yusuf Gagdi, who represents Pankshin, Kanke and Kanam Federal Constituency of Plateau State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, argued that there was no justification for inviting the President.

According to him, the implementation and funding of constituency projects are the responsibilities of the relevant ministries, departments and agencies, and not the President directly.

Gagdi also rejected the proposal to suspend legislative activities for one week, describing the suggestion as unnecessary and capable of disrupting the work of the House.

His position drew strong opposition from some lawmakers, resulting in shouting matches and disorder in the chamber as members exchanged arguments over the motion.

As the tension escalated, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas intervened and directed that the House vote on the matter to determine its position.

Details of the outcome of the vote were still being awaited as of the time of filing this report.
