The Presidency on Wednesday dismissed claims by the leader of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, that his life was under threat ahead of the 2027 general election, describing the allegations as false and misleading.
The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, made the position known in a statement posted on X, where he accused Obi of making baseless allegations to attract public sympathy.
Onanuga described Obi as a “pathological and serial liar,” alleging that the former presidential candidate had consistently attempted to blame the government for personal inconveniences through what he called exaggerations and unfounded claims.
The presidential aide also rejected Obi’s account of an incident involving his vehicle at an airport, maintaining that, based on Obi’s own explanation, the issue resulted from a breach of parking regulations and had no connection with the Federal Government.
He further dismissed Obi’s claim that he might not be alive to participate in the January 2027 election and the allegation that individuals were being pressured not to invite him to social events.
According to Onanuga, the claims were fabricated and intended to attract undue sympathy while diverting attention from what he described as Obi’s credibility challenges.
The presidential spokesman also denied allegations that the Federal Government was targeting Fidelity Bank because of Obi’s interest in the financial institution.
He maintained that the bank continued to perform well under the current administration’s economic reforms, insisting that the government had no reason to target the institution.
Onanuga added that rather than being persecuted by the government, Obi appeared to be dealing with the consequences of what he described as a series of unfounded statements.
He stressed that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remained focused on implementing its economic reforms and had neither the time nor the inclination to be distracted by Obi’s allegations.
